The authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina must provide security participants in the first "Queer Festival of Sarajevo, said Amnesty International after the assault of several people at the end of the first day of the festival. They must also immediately conduct a full investigation into these attacks and bring those responsible to justice.
Eight people, including policemen, were wounded in the attack by dozens of young men against visitors to the artistic and cultural festival, which opened its doors on September 24 at the School of Fine Arts in the heart of the capital, Sarajevo.
According to the nongovernmental organization of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender Udruzenje Q, organizer of the festival normally expected until September 28, police put participants at risk by allowing gay demonstrators approaching too close to the place of festival.
"The call defenders of gay rights for equality before the law and end discrimination faced intolerance and violence," said Nicola Duckworth, director of Europe and Asia Central Amnesty International.
The Festival organizers and their supporters, including journalists, have received and continue to receive death threats. Homophobic posters are distributed widely and posted in well in sight. Some media have used a homophobic language and held lying on the objectives of the festival.
In early September, in a letter to the Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Nikola Špirić, Amnesty International had expressed concern about the climate of intimidation that was developing in the country against lesbians, gays and of bisexual and transgender people; it had called for the protection of the rights of these people.
To date, the organization has still not received a reply to his letter. The obvious lack of measures taken by the authorities to prevent acts of intimidation and violence during the festival shows that its recommendations have not been heard.
Amnesty International calls on political leaders at the highest level to publicly condemn discrimination based on sexual orientation known or suspected persons, and to make clear that acts of discrimination or violence can not be tolerated, whatever is the victim.
"Gays and lesbians have the same rights as everyone else in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and authorities have an obligation to ensure their rights to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression," said Nicola Duckworth.

MOROCCO - demand immediate and unconditional release of six people sentenced for homosexuality
Six men were arrested in late November 2007 in Ksar El Kebir in response to rumors and public denunciations of "gay wedding". These people were attending a festival during which a video was filmed and put online on You Tube. Soon, local newspapers and Islamist groups have denounced the "perverse acts" and called the participants in the festival are punished. In the first instance, the six men claimed their innocence and denied having had sex during the party, what the You Tube video, shown during the trial showed. Despite the lack of evidence, five men were convicted and punished by imprisonment of four to six months, while the owner of the house where the party took place has been punished ten months in prison for driving Gay and illegal sale of alcohol. The Court of Appeal of Tangiers confirmed the verdict of ten months imprisonment for the owner of the house and cut between two and four months the sentence of five other men.
